Heartland Center is teaming up with Women in the Outdoors to present a weekend full of fun and learning just for women!
Enjoy a fun, exciting weekend retreat filled with outdoor skills workshops at the beautiful Heartland Center nestled in the Missouri River Bluffs.
Stretch your wings and try something new and exciting in a setting that encourages comfort and fun in the outdoors.
Choose from over 25 great classes (see the list below) taught by expert instructors!

Registration fee covers: lodging, instruction, supplies, meals and a subscription to the WITO magazine.
Participants must be 14 or older to attend.

Course Descriptions
Intro to Archery: 1 1/2 hr Learn to identify parts of the bow, how to select equipment to fit and practice
shooting on the archery range.
Antler Jewelry: 1 1/2 hr. (add $6) Create earrings or necklace using pieces of real deer antler and beads.
Birding Techniques: 1 1/2 hr. Walk the trails, valleys and dales of the Missouri River Bluffs to find and
identify some of Missouri’s feathered friends.
Camping: 1 1/2 hr. Learn how to select a campsite, pitch a tent and make you and your family’s camping
experience a more positive time.
Dutch Oven Cooking: 3 hr. Learn how to cook recipes in cast iron pots our ancestors used. Come hungry!
Fly Casting: 1 1/2 hr. Learn the fluid motion of casting a fly line in pursuit of some of Missouri’s game fish.
Fly Tying: 1 1/2 hr. Learn how to tie your own flies for fly fishing.
Frisbee Golf: 1 1/2 hr. Also knows as Disc Golf, learn this fun and exiting game of throwing a disc into
baskets on a course winding throughout the Heartland Center’s own 18 hole course.
Grilling Outdoors: 1 1/2 hr. Learn grilling techniques from a master griller!
G.P.S. Adventures: 3 hr. Global Positioning System: learn to use this technical compass to find your way
through the Heartland Center trails and learn about GeoCaching.
Herb Gardening and Vinegars: 1 1/2 hr. (add $10) Learn to identify and grow your own herbs then make
herbal vinegars.
High Ropes Challenge: 3 hr. Are you up to the challenge? Learn to overcome your fear of heights and
become more confident with everyday challenges!
Horse Back Riding: 1 1/2 hr. (add $15) ‘Let’s ride!’ Take a trail ride through the winding wooded trails of
the Heartland Center grounds.
Journaling: 1 1/2 hr. Learn to record your thoughts and observations from your time in nature. Instructor is
an accomplished outdoor author.
Kayaking: 1 1/2 hr. Learn the techniques of paddling a Kayak in the from the staff at KC Paddlers in the
Heartland Center Pool!
Kickless Shooting: 1 1/2 hr. Ever wanted to learn how to shoot a gun but was afraid of the recoil? Nothing
to fear here using a laser and projected image system. Shoot a simulation of an actual shotgun or rifle.
Letterboxing: 1 1/2 hr. Learn about this centuries old
family pastime to find hidden treasure in this worldwide
game. You will also make your own ink stamp.
Light My Fire: 1 1/2 hr. Learn practical techniques for building a variety of fires depending on your fire
needs, cooking or enjoying.
Missouri Edible Plants: 1 1/2 hr. Learn what the Missouri hills have to offer in the way of edible plants,
along with when and where to harvest them. Maybe some of them are in your own backyard!
Missouri River Hike: 1 1/2 hr. Take a hike down to the Missouri River and learn all about the flora and
fauna along the way.
Orienteering: 1 1/2 hr. Learn how to use a compass and map to find your way. Practice on a preset
course. Taught by world-renowned
Possum Trot Orienteering Club.
Outdoor Photography: 1 1/2 hr. (Please bring your own camera.) Learn how to take great pictures with
your own camera of loved ones, nature or wildlife.
Papermaking: 1 1/2 hr. This is the ultimate recycling skill! Using discarded paper, learn to make new
paper with your own creative touches.
Self Defense: 1 1/2 hr. Some one grabs you from behind, do you panic or do you know how to get away?
Learn some unique techniques to defend yourself.
Stream Ecology: 1 1/2 hr. Want an excuse to play in the creek? Take this class and learn all about the
watershed and the habitat in the creek. Taught by area leaders of the Brush Creek MidShed
Project.
Tree I. D.: 1 1/2 hr. Learn to identify the many trees that grow in Missouri and take a walk around the camp
to practice identifying them.
Turkey Feather Painting: 3 hr. Learn a unique technique for painting a simple picture on a Turkey tail
feather.
Weather Reading: 1 1/2 hr. Look into the sky, can you tell what the weather will be like? Learn to read
the clouds in this informative class.
